CPHG at God’s Acre Remembrance Day

Beryl Roberts House If we’re not careful, local history can just slip past and be forgotten. That’s especially true of unsung heroes like Beryl Roberts, our group’s founder. Fortunately, the main park in Coopers Plains is named after her, but there is no proper signage there. Beryl was instrumental in getting the Council to set the land aside as a park. She raised her family with husband Thomas nearby on Barham Street in the house that sits at the end of Arrunga Street. I approached the current owner-occupants and after a short chat, they agreed to having a plaque placed on their front fence. Perhaps the next thing we should do is to get Cr Griffiths to signpost the park properly?

Coopers Plains History Group at God’s Acre Remembrance Day On Sunday, 28th June 2026, there was a good crowd enjoying the sunshine at the Archerfield Cemetery at Archerfield Airport (the ‘cemetery with an airport’, or the ‘airport with a cemetery’). The graves and family plots were marked with information boards, there was a guided tour and some interesting, informative speeches and awards recognizing the efforts of volunteers. A major restoration of the cemetery’s fence line was announced involving grants and recruitment of a working team from the Queensland Government Skilling Queenslanders for Work Program. Friends of God’s Acre Inc., the volunteer group that has long cared for the cemetery, will provide the funds for the materials used, with salaries being funded by the State Government.

Friends of God’s Acre have a recently improved website at www.foga.org.au They are also on Facebook and the Secretary can be emailed on secretary@foga.org.au.
The cemetery is at 381 Beatty Road, Archerfield Airport. The Airside Cafe next door is open Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm and has indoor and outdoor dining. It makes a great little outing when the weather is fine.
Our group had an information stall which attracted some interest from some who specially attended the event to visit us.
